Step into a Movie Scene
Fort William is famous for its breathtaking scenery, which has been used as the location for many well-known movies.
- Harry Potter
Most well known movie that was filmed in several local areas is Harry Potter. The Jacobite Steam Train was none other than the Hogwarts Express which transported Harry Potter and his friends to and from Hogwarts. The most famous scene was of the train passing over the Glenfinnan Viaduct. You to can experience this movie scene by jumping onboard the Jacobite Steam train which travels from Fort William to Mallaig in the summer months. This wasn’t the only local filming location where the Harry Potter movies took place. Steall Falls in Glen Nevis is used as the backdrop to the stadium that hosted Quidditch matches. - Braveheart
Probably the most famous Scottish movie and with that unforgettable scene when Mel Gibson who plays William Wallace, rides his army into battle with his face painted with the Scottish Saltire shout ‘Freedom’. It was shot around Loch Leven, Glencoe and in the Mamores mountains near Fort William. The famous wooden village huts were built and set in Glen Nevis for the movie. - Rob Roy
The 1995 movie featuring Liam Neeson as ‘Rob Roy’, was filmed entirely in Scotland. Scene locations include Glencoe and Glen Nevis. - James Bond
2012 James Bond movie Skyfall featuring Daniel Craig and Judi Dench as M seen parts filmed in Glencoe. - The Highlander
Many of the highlander movies used local locations such as boat scenes being filmed on Loch Shiel, an opening battle scene at the eastern end of Glen Coe itself and Glen Nevis.
It has also been noted that scenes from many other films were shot in the local area, including Kidnapped, The 39 Steps and, apparently, Monty Python and the Holy Grail!
